DELHI METRO - CURRENT AND FUTURE
Delhi Metro is currently running through some of the major populations centers of Delhi, running through major parts of West Delhi, North Delhi, and East Delhi. It has taken load off the roads (although how long that lasts is a matter of debate given the number of vehicles getting added to Delhi roads per Delhi). Delhi Metro was started on December 24, 2002, after a long period of planning, and was greeted as a major improvement to the traffic infrastructure of the city. It has helped, and has attracted a large number of commuters on a regular basis (try taking the Metro route from Connaught Place to Dwarka at 6 in the afternoon).

IT BHU GETS THE MISSING I. ITS NOW AN IIT
The Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT BHU) will soon add the missing I to its name. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has taken a decision to convert IT BHU into an IIT.
Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari conveyed this decision to the Lok Sabha on Monday. She was replying to a question on whether the government had taken any decision to develop technology institutions across the country on the lines of the IITs.
IT BHU has long been considered a front-runner to been upgraded into an IIT. It already admits students through the IIT Joint Entrance Examination.
“The IIT status will go a long way in improving both infrastructure and academics at IT BHU. We will get better students and will be able to attract bright faculty,” said SN Upadhyaya, Director, IT BHU.
He added that with more academic freedom, the institute would look at starting inter-disciplinary courses.
“Today, we are limited by the rules and regulations of the university. We have to go through numerous councils to get a new academic programme passed. But with IIT status, these limitations will go,” said Upadhyaya.
“Appointment of faculty will also become easier,” he added.
Apart from IT BHU, an expert panel has identified seven other institutions that have potential for upgradation to IIT-level. These include Bengal Engineering College, Howrah, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Engineering and Technology Department of Jadavpur University, and Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University.

COCA COLA TRUCKS GO GREEN IN DELHI
The Coca-Cola trucks, which are used to deliver soft drink bottles in all neighborhood stores of capital, will soon stop leaving behind black smoke in the city. The engines of these vehicles are now being phased out to use CNG. Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit flagged the first three trucks of the green fleet on Thursday.
The Delhi chief minister called upon all residents of the capital to use eco-friendly alternatives wherever and whenever they could in their daily lives, and lauded Coca-Cola for having changed its fleet to the eco-friendly compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel.
The move takes forward the Delhi government’s efforts to encourage a transport system that is clean, effective and benefits the environment. It may be recollected that the local government had pushed hard six years back to initiate the process of replacing diesel buses plying on local routes by CNG buses to reduce pollution in Delhi.
President and CEO of Coca-Cola India Atul Singh said businesses, the government and civil society had to come together at all levels to solve environmental problems and move towards a cleaner future. He mentioned that at Coca-Cola India, the company has joined hands with the government, NGOs and local community to work on the issues of fresh water and climate protection. A lot of the good work on water and the environment has been done under the ‘Bhagidari’ (partnership) platform of the Delhi government.
A company spokesperson also mentioned that Coca-Cola India is also working hard on its objective of achieving a “net zero” balance with respect to groundwater usage by the end of the year. By being a ‘net zero’ user of groundwater, the Coca-Cola system in India will create a rainwater harvesting potential equivalent to the groundwater used for its operations in India.
The company has already installed over 400 rainwater-harvesting structures in the country. The company has constructed and revived several ponds, check dams and wells around India in partnership with NGOs, government agencies and local communities for the purpose.
